W.F. West ends season for Woodland with field goal for 38-35 decision

CHEHALIS — The W.F. West Bearcats ended Woodland’s season with a field goal on the final play of the game of their Class 2A district football playoff. According to Aaron VanTuyl of The Chronicle in Centralia, the field goal that gave W.F. West a 38-35 win came with no time on the clock after the Beavers were penalized for roughing the kicker on the previous play.

  Woodland quarterback Wyatt Harsh threw for 312 yards in his final game of a stellar career. W.F. West led 13-0 early, but Woodland would score the next three touchdowns. Tyler Flanagan, on a halfback pass, threw a touchdown pass to Alex Bishop for a 21-13 Woodland lead.   W.F. West would tie the game at 21 early in the second half, then Harsh found Bishop for another Woodland lead. Back came the Bearcats to tie it at 28 through three quarters. Christian Yager caught a touchdown pass from Harsh early in the fourth quarter, but the Beavers did not score again. The Bearcats tied the game with 3:05 to play. Woodland failed to score on its next possession, then W.F. West got in position for the game-winner. The first attempt, from 35 yards out, was no good, but the penalty gave the Bearcats another chance. While Woodland ruled the skies, W.F. West took care of the ground attack. The Bearcats rushed for 447 yards, according to Woodland’s book. The two teams combined for more than 900 yards of offense. Woodland finished the season with a 5-5 record. The Beavers went 4-2 in the 2A Greater St. Helens League and tied for second place.
