VANCOUVER – Clark County Councilor Michelle Belkot today announced she did not participate in the League of Women Voters of Clark County’s candidate forum scheduled for September 23. Belkot stated she never committed to the event and that the League’s press release listing candidates as confirmed participants was inaccurate and misleading.
“I never agreed to appear, and I will not participate,” Belkot said. “My decision is deliberate and principled.”
Belkot cited the League’s alignment with progressive activist networks that vilify federal law enforcement officers carrying out their legal duties as a primary reason for declining.
“I stand with law enforcement—local, state, and federal—and I will never lend my support or presence to organizations that put a target on officers doing their jobs lawfully,” Belkot said. “That principle is non-negotiable.”
Belkot also pointed to the League’s publication of partisan material directed at her personally. Jackie Lane, a longtime Democratic activist and League observer, has reports and commentary published on the League’s official website that frequently target Belkot and are clearly partisan. The League continues to platform this material while claiming nonpartisanship.
“A genuine nonpartisan organization does not partner with groups that demonize law enforcement, publish targeted partisan commentary against one elected official, and then invite that same official to its forums as if the playing field is level,” Belkot said. “The pattern is clear: the League has abandoned neutrality in favor of progressive activism and selective political attacks.”
Belkot emphasized that she remains available to discuss her record and positions with District 2 residents through other forums, town halls, and direct engagement. She reiterated her commitment to representing taxpayers, public safety, and local control.
“Voters deserve accurate information and honest hosts,” Belkot said. “The League’s recent actions fall short of both.”
