Information we collect

You can read the vast majority of Clark County Today without providing any personal information. We collect information in the following limited ways:

• Information you choose to give us. When you submit a letter to the editor, post a reader comment (where commenting is enabled), create a “Your CCT” reader account, or contact us directly, you provide information such as your name or chosen display name, email address, an optional phone number, your city or town, and the content of your message.
• Automatic technical information. Like most websites, our hosting infrastructure records standard server log information when you visit — such as your IP address, browser type, device and operating system, referring page, and the date and time of your request. This is used to operate, secure and troubleshoot the site.
• Preferences stored on your device. Some reader features (such as following storylines/topics, dismissing alerts, or remembering what you have already seen) save small pieces of information in your own browser. This stays on your device and is not tied to a personal account.

How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

• Operate, maintain and secure this website
• Review and, at our editors’ discretion, publish letters to the editor and reader comments
• Respond to questions, feedback and other messages you send us
• Understand which stories and topics readers find useful so we can improve our coverage
• Detect, prevent and address spam, abuse, fraud and technical problems

Letters to the editor

When you submit a letter to the editor through this website, we collect your first and last name, your email address, an optional phone number, your city or town of residence, an optional subject line, and the text of your letter.

Letters are sent to our editors for review. No letter is published automatically. If your letter is published, we may publish your name and city or town alongside it. Your email address and phone number are used only to contact you about your submission and are not published. We use technical information (such as the IP address a submission was sent from) only to help prevent spam and abuse.

If you would like to submit photos or graphics with your letter, please email them to [email protected] as described on the submission page.

Your CCT reader accounts

You can optionally create a free “Your CCT” account to comment, follow storylines and keep track of your activity. Reader accounts are separate from any staff or administrator accounts, and having one is never required to read the site.

We use passwordless sign-in. When you enter your email address to sign in, we send a one-time sign-in link (and, if you prefer, a short numeric code) that is valid briefly and can be used once. We never ask you to create or store a password with us. For security we keep only a scrambled, one-way fingerprint of each sign-in link — never the link itself — and it is discarded after it is used or expires.

Your email address is private. It is used to sign you in, to recognize your account, and — if we ever need to — to contact you about your account or your comments. It is never shown publicly, never displayed next to your comments, and is not shared with advertisers or used for marketing. The only thing shown publicly is the display name you choose, which appears with your comments.

To keep you signed in, we store a single secure sign-in cookie in your browser; see “Cookies” below. You can sign out at any time, change your display name from your account page, or ask us to delete your account and its associated data using the contact details below. We do not sign you up for any newsletter or marketing simply because you created an account.

Reader comments

Where reader commenting is enabled, you can comment either as a guest — by providing a display name and an email address — or while signed in to a “Your CCT” account. In both cases we collect the display name shown with your comment, your email address, the content of your comment, and standard technical information such as your IP address and browser, which help us moderate discussion and prevent abuse. When you are signed in, your comment is attributed to your account’s display name and the verified email on your account; your email is stored privately and is never shown publicly. Comments and the display name are shown publicly with the story — please do not include information in a comment that you do not want to be public.

All comments are reviewed before they appear, and comments are subject to our moderation and comment policy. We may edit, decline or remove comments at our discretion, and we may restrict accounts or addresses that violate our policy.

Follows, saved topics and preferences

Some features let you follow storylines or topics and remember your preferences. If you are not signed in, this information is stored only in your own web browser on the device you are using — it is not connected to a personal account on our servers, and it will not carry over to other devices or browsers. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser’s site data.

If you are signed in to a “Your CCT” account, the storylines you follow are saved to your account so they are available wherever you sign in. When you first sign in, anything you were already following on your device is merged into your account. You can stop following a storyline at any time from your account.

Search and “Ask CCT” questions

To improve our search and our “Ask CCT” feature, we keep anonymous records of the questions and search terms readers enter, along with any topic or location filters used. These records are not linked to your identity, IP address or account, and older records are removed automatically over time. We use them only to understand what readers are looking for and to make these features more useful.

AI-assisted features

We use AI-assisted tools to support certain newsroom features — for example, generating audio narration of our articles and assisting our editors. These tools operate on our own published article content. They do not require, and we do not send them, personal information about readers in order to provide these features.

Log files

Clark County Today follows a standard procedure of using log files. The information collected by log files can include IP addresses, browser type, Internet Service Provider, date and time stamp, and referring/exit pages. This information is used to operate and secure the website, analyze trends, administer the site, and understand general usage. It is not used to personally identify individual readers.

Cookies and similar technologies

This website uses a small number of cookies and similar browser-storage technologies that are necessary for the site to function and to remember your reader preferences (as described above). If you sign in to a “Your CCT” account, we set one secure sign-in cookie so you stay signed in; it is removed when you sign out. We do not currently use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies on this website.

You can control or delete cookies and browser storage through your browser settings. Blocking some of them may affect how certain features of the site work.

Analytics

We rely on the standard server logs described above, together with the anonymous search and “Ask CCT” records, to understand how the website is used. We do not currently use third-party analytics services that track you across other websites. If that changes, we will update this policy to describe the provider and what it collects.

Advertising

Clark County Today is supported in part by advertising and sponsorships. Advertising space shown on this website does not currently place third-party advertising or tracking cookies on your device through this site. Advertising sales and campaign management are handled separately through our advertising center, which operates under its own terms and privacy practices.

Service providers

We rely on trusted third-party providers to host this website and its database, to deliver email on our behalf, and to power AI-assisted features such as audio narration. These providers process information only as needed to perform services for us and are not permitted to use it for their own unrelated purposes.

Data retention and deletion

We keep the information you submit — such as letters to the editor, comments, reader-account details and messages — for as long as needed for the purpose it was provided and for our legitimate editorial and record-keeping needs. Sign-in links and codes are short-lived and discarded after use or expiry. Server logs and anonymous search records are kept for a limited period and then removed or aggregated. If you would like us to correct or delete information you have submitted, or to delete your reader account, contact us using the details below and we will respond within a reasonable time.

Children’s information

Protecting the privacy of children is important to us. This website is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take reasonable steps to remove it.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal information, including the right to request access to it, to request that we correct or delete it, and to object to or restrict certain uses. Residents of California have the right to request the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected, to request deletion, and to know that we do not sell personal information. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below; we will respond within the time required by applicable law.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to our website or practices. When we do, we will revise the “last updated” date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
