HS sports: Skyview soccer clinches berth to state

Columbia River is district champion; La Center wins, too

The Skyview Storm are back in the Class 4A state soccer playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Michael Kimbrell scored both goals Thursday night at District Stadium in Battle Ground, leading Skyview to a 2-0 win over Auburn in a bi-district playoff match. Skyview placed third in the 2014 state tournament a year after the Storm won the state championship. Now the Storm get to return to the sweet 16. Skyview will play a seeding match Saturday but no matter the result, the Storm will be playing next week in the first round of state. In other 4A playoff matches, Union fell to Olympia 1-0 but remains alive in the state playoff hunt. The Titans will take on Todd Beamer at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup in a winner-to-state, loser-out match. Heritage’s best season in years came to an end Thursday. Sumner topped the Timberwolves 4-1.

Class 2A:

The Columbia River Chieftains will go to state with a perfect record and a district title. Columbia River edged Woodland 2-1 at Kiggins Bowl in the 2A District 4 championship match, improving to 19-0. “We’re not done yet,” coach Filomon Afenegus said, according to a tweet from Columbia River’s athletic department. Neither is Woodland. The Beavers go to state as the No. 2 seed from the district. Meanwhile, Ridgefield’s season came to an end with a 5-3 loss to R.A. Long in the consolation semifinals.

Class 1A:

The La Center Wildcats clinched a berth to state with a 3-0 victory over Hoquiam, advancing to the finals of the 1A District 4 tournament. La Center will play in the finals at 1 p.m. Saturday against United at King’s Way Christian High School.
