Discovery High School student Zoe Southard recently spent a week at the state Capitol in Olympia to serve as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives. She was sponsored by Rep. David Stuebe of the 17th Legislative District.
“It was a pleasure to sponsor Zoe during her time in Olympia,” said Stuebe, R-Washougal. “She approached the week with enthusiasm, focus, and a strong willingness to learn. I was very impressed by the dedication she showed throughout the program and am confident she has a very promising future ahead.”
During her week as a page, Zoe attended Legislative Page School each day, where she learned about the three branches of state government, how laws are made, and the value of respectful dialogue in the legislative process.
She also performed a variety of key tasks that support the daily operations of the Legislature, such as delivering messages and documents to legislators and staff and assisting on the House floor.
Zoe, who is 15 years old and from the Camas School District, enjoys a wide variety of activities in her free time, including dancing, reading, and sketching.
“The page program gives students a unique, firsthand perspective on how state government works,” Stuebe added. “It’s always rewarding to see young people take an interest in the legislative process, and I look forward to welcoming more outstanding students to Olympia in the future.”
Each year, students from across Washington apply to participate in the House Page Program. To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and receive written permission from their parents and school. Pages earn $65 per day while serving in the program.
