Closure is for overhead sign bridge installation work
VANCOUVER – Nighttime travelers who use Interstate 5 through Vancouver should add extra time to their trips and prepare for possible delays later this week.
On Fri., July 24, the Washington State Department of Transportation’s contractor crews will close the interstate overnight, in both directions, between the I-5/I-205 split and SR 500 for work to install an overhead sign bridge across all lanes of the highway as part of the I-5 SB Interstate Bridge to NE 78th Vic. – Active Traffic Management project.
The overhead sign bridge is part of a system of the new smart technology tools being installed along the I-5 corridor in Vancouver, which include adaptive ramp meters, new traffic cameras, and electronic message signs. When activated later this year, these tools will work in tandem to maximize the existing roadway system, providing real-time information to help reduce traffic backups and delays, while improving safety.
Construction details
- From 11 p.m. Fri., July 24 to 6 a.m. Sat., July 25:
- Northbound I-5 at SR 500: Crews will divert all lanes of northbound I-5 onto eastbound SR 500. Travelers who need to continue on to northbound I-5 can do so by traveling on northbound I-205 then back on to northbound I-5.
- Southbound I-5 at I-205: Crews will divert all lanes of southbound I-5 onto southbound I-205. Travelers who need to continue to southbound I-5 will travel westbound on SR 500 or SR 14 then back on to southbound I-5.
During the overnight full closure, all on- and off-ramps within the work zone area, between the I-5/I-205 split and SR 500, will be closed. Travelers will need to use an alternate route.
This ATM project is scheduled for completion in advance of the full closure of the northbound Interstate Bridge span, Sept. 9-20, for the Trunnion Replacement project.
