Pandemic has not prevented the ‘Pastry Princess’ from serving others

VANCOUVER – Bonnie Brasure is the self-proclaimed “Pastry Princess” of Bleu Door Bakery. The French-inspired and decorated bakery sits on Main Street in Downtown Vancouver and makes a variety of treats and breakfasts, brunches, and lunches.
Although the Coronavirus pandemic has made this little bakery change how they operate, that has not stopped them from doing some good and taking care of Clark County residents in a time of uncertainty.
“We closed March 19th. I will not forget that date,” said Brasure, who did not want to sit by and wait. She wanted to help the less fortunate residents of Clark County. “About a month into it, I was going stir crazy. We have to do something. And who is taking care of the people sleeping on the street?”
So Brasure and her team of employees decided to act. Cooking various meals and working with several area groups, churches, and senior living communities to help provide meals to those who needed it most.
“We were doing 50 meals a day for five weeks,’’ Brasure said. “We did over 1,500 meals, and we sent them out to different groups.”
Brasure has no plans of stopping any time soon. Every year around the Christmas season, she and her team put on a large holiday meal for the homeless in Clark County.
“We’ll cook meals, plate it, and get it all pulled together boxed and sent,” she said. These Christmas meals have been wildly successful as well, “this year we are hoping to hit 500 people, years past I think we hit about 750 people.”
“You have to take care of your community,” Brasure said. “My community here has embraced me since the beginning and supported me and helped me grow, and it has been phenomenal. I want to give back, I need to say thank you for what [the community has] done, and there is a sector in our community that needs help.”
