VANCOUVER – Travelers who use southbound Interstate 5 to access I-205 in Vancouver should plan to use a different route.
On Friday night, July 10, Washington State Department of Transportation contactor Kerr Contractors Oregon, LLC will close the ramp from southbound I-5 to southbound I-205 at Exit 7 to continue pavement repairs and complete striping work. By fully closing this section of highway, crews can repair more roadway in less time while reducing impacts and delays for travelers.
What to expect
From 10 p.m., Friday July 10 to 8 p.m., Saturday, July 11:
- The ramp from southbound I-5 to southbound I-205 at Exit 7 will fully close.
- All southbound lanes of I-205 between the I-5/I-205 split and Exit 36 for Northeast 134th Street will close.
- All lanes and ramps on southbound I-205 just south of Exit 36 for Northeast 134th Street will remain open, including the on-ramp from Northeast 134th Street to southbound I-205.
Access from southbound I-5 to southbound I-205 is scheduled to reopen Saturday night July 11, ahead of Oregon Department of Transportation's planned closure of I-5 near the Rose Quarter. Reopening the ramp before that closure will provide travelers with another route around the work zone and help reduce delays.
During construction, the nighttime speed limit on southbound I-5 through the work zone will be reduced from 70 mph to 55 mph. Travelers should expect delays and slow traffic through the area.
Smart work zone system
To help reduce delays and improve safety, crews will use a temporary smart work zone system with zipper merging through the work zone. This system gives drivers real-time traffic information before they reach the work zone.
Crews have been removing damaged concrete panels and resurfacing the highway with new layers of asphalt across all lanes and shoulders. The project also includes guardrail repairs, new signage and stormwater treatment upgrades.
Paving and striping work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled at any time. When the project is complete in late summer 2026, travelers will have a smoother ride, and the “Rough Road” signs will be removed between Northeast 179th Street and I-205.
