In the race for Washington's 18th Legislative District, Position 2, voters face a stark choice between an advocate, Rep. John Ley and candidate careerist, Deken Letnich, who is seeking a political job in Olympia.
Incumbent State Representative John Ley has consistently demonstrated his primary focus remains firmly on local needs, rather than treating public service as a personal stepping stone.
Ley's efforts are rooted in practical advocacy for Southwest Washington residents. He has been a prominent leader against costly tolling proposals and the inclusion of light rail on the I-5 bridge replacement project (IBR), by championing fiscal responsibility. Rep. Ley actively strives to curb state spending and protect taxpayer’s hard-earned money.
Conversely, challenger Deken Letinich, increasingly faces criticism for behaving like a professional candidate.
Critics point to his continuous political positioning as evidence of someone simply looking for an institutional payroll slot.
Rather than building a localized grassroots movement, Letnich's political trajectory appears calculated. He has shifted from physical labor work to perpetual campaigning, by making multiple attempts at different legislative offices across consecutive election cycles
After mounting a failed 2024 bid for highly successful incumbent State Representative Stephanie McClintock’s 18th District, Position 1 seat, which she won in an overwhelming victory, he quickly pivoted to target John Ley’s 18th District, Position 2 seat in 2026.
This pattern of hopping between different elective offices leaves voters questioning whether his true commitment lies with the unique needs of the 18th Legislative District or with simply securing a permanent job in Olympia at taxpayer expense.
The choice is clear … re-elect Rep. John Ley!
