Haley Hanson scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the second half to lead Camas to a 44-36 victory over Eastlake Wednesday at the Class 4A girls state basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome.
Hanson, a sophomore guard, made three of her seven shots from the field and five of her six free throws in the final two quarters as the Papermakers advanced to the quarterfinals, where they were scheduled to meet Moses Lake Thursday night at 9 p.m.
Camas fell behind 10-6 after the first quarter of Wednesday’s game but the Papermakers’ defense stepped up to hold Eastlake to just 10 points combined in the second and third quarters. Camas had a 24-10 advantage in the two quarters.
For the game, Camas held Eastlake to 14-for-52 shooting from the field (26.9 percent), including four of 17 from 3-point range (23.5 percent). The Papermakers also struggled to find the bottom of the nets, making only 16 of its 51 shots from the field (31.4 percent) and two of 13 shots from 3-point range (15.4 percent).
Hanson was 5-for-13 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line. Teammates Emma Jones and Madison Freemon each added seven points and Maggie Wells and Courtney Clemmer each chipped in six points. Clemmer also had a game-high 11 rebounds and Jones led the defensive effort with three steals.
