Jump on ‘em early:

Camas wasted no time in this one, using a balanced attack to score on its first drive. Six run plays, four pass plays. Touchdown and a 7-0 lead. That set the tone as Camas scored three first-quarter touchdowns to take command.

Determination stopped one TD, giving opportunity for a turnover:

Sherwood, trailing 7-0, got a huge run on its first offensive play. But it could have been a touchdown. Instead, Ryan Rushall chased down the ball carrier for the tackle. Rushall sprinted 43 yards to make the tackle. A few plays later, Sherwood got free on another run, this one up the middle. It was hard to see the number but I believe it was No. 8 -- Rushall again. Not only did he make the tackle, he stripped the ball, forcing a fumble that Camas recovered. Still 7-0, and Camas would go the length of the field on offense for a 13-0 lead.

Ja’Michael Shelton!

On that second Camas touchdown drive, the Papermakers found themselves on their own 1-yard line. No problem. Go deep! Quarterback Kyle Allen hit Ja’Michael Shelton on a 45-yard pass to give the Papermakers plenty of breathing room. A few plays later, Shelton caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Allen. Two catches for 81 yards on the same drive. Not bad.

Defense, special teams, same guy:

Taylor Adams had a big play on the next Sherwood series, and then when Sherwood tried to punt, Adams blocked it and recovered it, setting up an easy touchdown drive for the Papermakers. Just like that, 20-0 before the end of the first quarter.

Schultz Scores:

Will Schultz rushed for two touchdowns and 134 yards in this one. The big highlight was a 59-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. On that play, Luc Sturbelle and Rushall, wide receivers, made their blocks to spring Schultz to the outside. The rest was a sprint to the end zone that Schultz was not about to lose.

Fourth-down stop:

Trevor Bentley got an open-field tackle on fourth-and-goal inside two minutes of the first half. That gave Camas the opportunity to run out the clock, up 27-0 at the break. This turned into something, too, when Sherwood scored on its first possession of the second half.

Coach-speak:

What did Jon Eagle learn about his team in Week 2? “We did some things better, and we have a lot we need to work on. We had some players step up and play well.” Thoughts on Week 3 vs. Davis: “Solid team,’’ Eagle said. “Young.” Camas defeated Davis 64-6 last season in Yakima. This Friday’s game, a 6 p.m. start, is the first home game for the Papermakers since they won the Class 4A state championship game in 2016.
