The eighth Velvet Acres Gardens Cruise-In was Sunday at the farm in east Vancouver

It started out as a surprise birthday party for a then 70-year old who loves cars.
It was simply a cruise-in at the family farm, with a lot of family and friends.
Now in its eighth year, the car show at Velvet Acres Gardens in Vancouver keeps growing.
On Sunday, there were close to 100 vehicles on display.
Also on hand, vendors selling food and crafts, a band playing classic rock, and, of course, the apple cannon. Yes, a “weapon of fruit,” if you will, to shoot apples at targets downrange.
“My dad is a big car fanatic. For his 70th birthday, we surprised him,” said Crystal Boldt, a manager of the family-run farm.
“Everybody loved it. Everybody had a great time. We had a great time,” she said.
So, the family decided, let’s do it every year.
“It’s a fun community event.”
The farm, not normally open to the public on Sundays, was open for the event. So plenty of fresh produce. Plus, fresh food was in some of the door prizes for the show.
By the way, Gary Boldt, who is now closer to 80 than 70, still loves cars. Not only that, he still races them.
“He has been the king of the track this year,” Crystal proudly proclaims. “He’s got all the awards.”
Gary Boldt competes in drag racing in Madras, Ore., and he brought his race car to Velvet Acres on Sunday, too.
The cruise-in showcased a few new cars, a lot of older cars, and even some antiques.
“I just love seeing everyone come out and have a fun day together,” Crystal Boldt said. “It brings a lot of joy to my dad. That’s what it’s all about.”
