Spring has arrived, at least in high school sports

All high school spring sports will be in action by next week in Clark County.

First games of the season scheduled for Friday

Hey spring sports, you’ve got next. In the fall, Clark County had two state champions in football, among the many, many great accomplishments by area athletes. In the winter, Clark County had two state champions in basketball, among the many, many great accomplishments by area athletes. What say you baseball? Softball? Boys soccer? How about you track and field athletes, golfers, and tennis sensations? Oh it’s time. Sure, it might still be snowing this week. Sure, it is not spring for a couple more weeks. The schedule does not care. Spring sports begin Friday with a few contests. By next week, just about everyone will be scheduled to compete in their sports. Here is a quick look at what happened last year, just to get you in the right frame of mind. The Woodland Beavers, the Columbia River Chieftains, the Skyview Storm, and Camas Papermakers won state team titles in the spring of 2018. Woodland won it all in softball. With Class 2A state Player of the Year Olivia Grey returning to the pitching circle, well, the Beavers have to be a team to watch this season, as well.

Columbia River reigned supreme in boys soccer. The Chieftains scored 65 goals in 2018, conceding only nine. Only one time did Columbia River give up two goals in a match. That defense was simply awesome. The Skyview boys tennis team won the state championship, and the Camas boys track and field team tied for first. Among the other top performances among last spring, the Skyview Storm (Class 4A)  and King’s Way Christian Knights (1A) both finished second in baseball. La Center, meanwhile, reached the 1A state quarterfinals. In softball, Camas reached the 4A semifinals, Ridgefield made it to the 2A quarterfinals, and Prairie qualified for the 3A state tournament. In track and field, Ridgefield’s boys team finished second, with Trey Knight winning the discus and shot put as a sophomore.  

  Oh, and even though boys golf is a fall sport in the regular season, state is in the spring. We have to remind folks that Graham Moody of Mountain View is the defending 3A state champion. Remember, everyone, in theory it will get warmer in the coming weeks. Have a great season.
