Storm to finish season with a matchup against Heritage

A dozen years of 10 or more games:

The regular season is nine games in high school football. Skyview, though, had been able to play at least 10 games for 12 consecutive seasons. That impressive run did not start out with a great season. Just a good-enough season. In Steve Kizer’s second year as head coach in 2005, the Storm went 3-3 in league play to qualify for the Week 10 state qualifier playoff game. Skyview would lose that one and finish 3-7 that season. Things were looking up, with those three league wins, but no one at the time could have foreseen the next 11 seasons of excellence. In 2006, the Storm started 11-0 before falling in the state quarterfinals. That was the start of 11 consecutive winning regular seasons. (The Storm went 5-4 in 2007, lost the Week 10 playoff to finish 5-5. Every other season has been an overall winning record.) In 2009, the Storm reached the Class 4A state semifinals. In 2011, the Storm made it to the Class 4A state championship game. And in 2016, Skyview again reached the state semifinals. The playoff streak has ended, but the Storm do have something to play for this Friday against Heritage. A win would give them 12 consecutive winning regular seasons.

Skyview’s best sequence:

Not much went Skyview’s way Friday against Union, but the Storm gave themselves a chance with a two-minute offense at the end of the first half. Quarterback Max Rose completed four passes for 68 yards, including an 8-yard TD pass to Cole Grossman on the final play of the first half. Tavis Pinkney caught two passes for 48 yards to set up the score. That made it 22-7 at the half. Skyview got the ball first in the second half, too. Unfortunately for the Storm, an early turnover doomed any possibility of a comeback.

Numbers:

Skyview running back Jalynnee McGee rushed for 112 yards on 15 carries. Rose ended up with 236 yards passing. Pinkney had 10 catches for 140 yards.
