Six Spudders team up for championship
The Ridgefield Spudders have the best Class 2A boys golf team in all of Washington.
Six Spudders traveled to Liberty Lake Golf Course in Spokane for the 2A state tournament, all six made the cut, and all six ended up helping out in the team score.
The 2A and 1A schools still use a points system to determine a team champion. The more golfers who make the cut, the better the chances to place.
In Ridgefield’s case, the only place was first. The Spudders scored 128 to win by 44.5 points. To put that in perspective, the second-through-sixth-place teams were separated by less than 40 points.
Kellen Bringhurst had himself quite a WIAA postseason by playing for Ridgefield’s baseball team that made it to the quarterfinals before turning in his baseball bat in for a putter. He finished fourth in the tournament, eight strokes behind winner Jordan Medcalf of Lynden.
Cade Bringhurst finished 13th, Eli Saenz was 19th. Nick Radosevich, Caden Whitsitt, and Kale Suomi all finished in the top 30.
Several courses across the state hosted tournaments.
At Indian Summer Country Club in Lacey, Class 3A boys defending champion Graham Moody of Mountain View rebounded from a first-round 76 on Tuesday with a 71 on Wednesday. The round of the day moved him into a tie for third place, four strokes off the lead.
In the 4A boys, Owen Huntington of Camas finished 10th at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course in Spokane.
In the 4A girls, Emma Cox of Camas placed 14th, leading the Papermakers to a fourth-place team finish at Hangman Valley Golf Course in Spokane. The 4A and 3A tournaments used stroke play to determine the team standings.
The 3A girls played at Hawks Prairie Golf Course in Lacey. Kiana Coburn of Fort Vancouver was the top golfer from Clark County. She finished 20th.
Columbia River ended up fifth as a team, using the points system, at the 2A girls tournament at Meadowwood Golf Course in Spokane. Naomi Phelps led the Chieftains, finishing in 16th place.
Sean Ball of Seton Catholic was the top local golfer at the 1A boys tournament at Olympia Country and Golf Club. He took fifth place, finishing seven strokes off the lead.
And in 1A girls, played at Tumwater Valley Golf Course, Riley Philbrook of King’s Way Christian took 20th.
