Reconnecting with Columbia River’s new football coach

Paul Valencia used to interview Brett Smedley, the football player, for the Columbia River Chieftains in the early 2000s. Now, he is talking with Columbia River head coach Brett Smedley.The school announced earlier this month that Smedley would be the new head coach.Smedley hopes this will be a long-term relationship with a school he loves.Here is the announcement the athletic department released:“Columbia River High School is pleased to announce Brett Smedley as the eighth head football coach in school history.“Brett is a 2003 Columbia River graduate, a multi-sport athlete, and an all-state defensive end for CR football in 2002. Coach Smedley played football at Western Washington University and Linfield College.”A Linfield graduate, he has served as the defensive coordinator at Columbia River the past two seasons. He also was an assistant coach at Battle Ground and was the head coach of Coupeville in 2015.I am really excited to start working with the kids and coaches and to give back to the River community that has done so much for my life,” Smedley said. Smedley takes over for Christian Swain, who resigned this winter.
