Plan for detours during directional closures over two upcoming weekends
VANCOUVER — Work to repave a nearly 6-mile stretch of State Route 500, between Interstate 5 and Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard (SR 503), in Vancouver began Mon., Aug. 5.
Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will pave both directions of the highway, and repair bridge joints on the SR 500 overpass over I-205. Crews will repave the right turn lanes onto SR 500 from Northeast Falk Road/42nd Avenue and Northeast Stapleton Road/54th Avenue and widen the ramps.
“This stretch of highway is heavily traveled and sees about 60,000 vehicles a day,” said Devin Reck, project engineer. “We last paved it in 2002, so between aging, lots of traffic, and our winter weather freeze and thaw cycles, the condition of the road has really deteriorated and is in need of repair.”
Weekend closures
Crews will require two weekend directional closures of SR 500, between I-5 and Northeast Thurston Way, to complete the weather-dependent work.
- Westbound closure:
- Beginning at 9 p.m. Fri., Aug. 9 until 4 a.m. Mon., Aug. 12: Crews will close all lanes of westbound SR 500 between I-5 and Northeast Thurston Way.
- Eastbound closure:
- The closure of the eastbound lanes will be scheduled at a later date, and will occur between 10 p.m. on a Friday and 5 a.m. on a Monday.
- Travelers should plan to use alternate routes during the closures.
Construction details
- Intermittent overnight single and double lane closures on both directions of the highway between Northeast Thurston Way to Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard.
- Expect delays of up to 20 minutes.
This $6 million dollar project is scheduled for completion in fall 2019.
