Paul Valencia’s recent article regarding Vancouver leaders pushing for fixed-rail infrastructure highlights a lack of critical context surrounding Councilor Erik Paulsen’s rhetoric.
Paulsen’s claim that "There is no other city in the state of Washington with 300,000 people in it that does not have fixed-rail service" is an empty statistical trick. Seattle is the only city in the entire state that actually meets that population tier. By that logic, there is also no other city of 300,000 people that has a purple city hall or a space needle — because there are no other cities of that size.
Furthermore, his claim that converting The Vine BRT lines to a tram system is as simple as "laying the rail" completely glosses over the immense, disruptive engineering realities of rail conversion, utility overhauls, and electrification.
Allowing local politicians to use misleading demographic metrics and oversimplified engineering claims completely unchecked does a disservice to Clark County taxpayers, who would ultimately foot the bill for these massive projects. Future reporting must challenge these assertions with objective data.
