Columbia River to face Woodland in key game for both teams

Despite a 1-4 season record, Columbia River can vault itself into the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League playoff picture with a win at Woodland Friday.

Shout out to some River defensive gems:

Tristan Hoyer had himself a night with a lot of positive plays for the Chieftains. In the first quarter, he got to a scrambling quarterback and forced a fumble, which was recovered by teammate Monyell Hedgmon. Later in the first half, Hoyer knocked down a third-down pass. Skyview chose to punt on fourth down.

And on one drive, the Columbia River defense picked up two sacks. Logan Wilson got the first one, then Hoyer chased down the QB for the other. On that one, give credit to the River defensive backs. The initial pass protection was there, but there was no one open, allowing time for Hoyer to get the sack.

What did Christian Swain learn about his team in Week 5? “We learned that we can play with teams like Skyview if we execute clean and tackle better.” MVP on offense: Kanon Eaton, who had more than 60 yards receiving, plus scored River’s only touchdown. MVP on defense: Koben Jamison. “As usual, all over the field,” Swain said. Thoughts on Week 6 vs. Woodland: “I’m extremely excited for the opportunities we have ahead of us,’’ Swain said. “Woodland is the first big opportunity. The QB (Wyatt Harsh) is a great player as well as No. 21 (Tyler Flanagan). We feel like we have several great young players as well that are just starting to realize their talent. This will be a great opportunity for them to take another step forward against a good, well coached ball club.”
