Chieftains still celebrating perfect season and state title

Reaching the state semifinals was a big deal for this team, the first appearance in the final four for the program. Making it to the finals was yet another milestone. Then the Columbia River Chieftains went and won the whole darn thing. The bar has been raised.

Columbia River sits atop the Class 2A boys soccer world, state champions forever. The statistics show the dominance, too. Coach Filomon Afenegus’ team scored 65 goals and conceded nine. Only one time in the season did an opponent score two goals in a match. The Columbia River defense had 15 shutouts, including the final two matches in Sumner to win the title. It was not like the Chieftains pumped up their schedule with a bunch of weak opponents just to get some easy wins. Columbia River took on three 4A programs in non-league matches, and won them all. Add it up, and it was 23 matches, 23 victories. Perfection. In the final week of the the spring sports season, Clark County had four squads from traditional team sports play for state championships. All are worthy of recognition. Only one was perfect, though. ClarkCountyToday.com is naming the Columbia River boys soccer its Team of the Spring. Congratulations to the Chieftains.
