Local athletes win titles in track and field; tennis

Camas boys win share of 4A team track and field title

He told us that last year was a disappointment. He acknowledged he got a little emotional, too, because he was so bummed about how he performed. Earlier this season, he promised things would be different at the WIAA’s state track and field championships. Trey Knight of Ridgefield fulfilled that promise.

Saturday, he won the Class 2A state championship in the discus, a day after winning the shot put competition. He was not the only double-winner at state track, held at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. Camas’ runner Daniel Maton won the Class 4A title in the 800-meter run Saturday. Earlier in the week, he was the champion runner in the 1,600. Those points, combined with several other placings by the Papermakers, led Camas to a share of the 4A team title. Ridgefield had another champion, as well. Bryan Tavera won the triple jump Saturday. On the other side of the state, Skyview tennis still stands tall.

Andrew Kabacy defended his Class 4A singles title. He defeated Battle Ground’s Gunnar Harlen in the semifinals Saturday morning, then beat Clemente Varas of Eastlake in three sets in the championship match. Meanwhile, the Skyview doubles team of Chris Sheppert and Joey Gaylor finished sixth. Combined, that was enough points for Skyview to win the tennis team title for the second consecutive season.
