Another stellar performance for the Columbia River boys soccer team.
We are in the middle of the two weeks of state championship competition for Washington high school sports. The spring sports season crowned some champions last week and will crown more in other sports this week.
For traditional team sports, Columbia River boys soccer and Seton Catholic baseball are the Clark County squads still playing.
Columbia River will take on Squalicum at 1 p.m. Friday in Federal Way in a Class 2A state semifinal. The winner will face the winner of the Bainbridge-Sehome match. The championship is set for 2:45 p.m. Saturday.
In baseball, Seton Catholic got a 5-1 win over Klahoya and then a 9-2 victory over Rochester on Saturday to advance to the Class 1A semifinals. Seton Catholic, the 5-seed in the tournament, will face No. 1 Montesano at 7 p.m. Friday in Bellingham. The winner will take on the winner of King’s-Overlake/Bear Creek at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The rest of the soccer and baseball teams from Clark County that made it to state lost last week.
Also last week, we saw the end of the softball, tennis and golf seasons.
Seton Catholic earned two wins at state to make it to the championship game before falling to Montesano in the finals on Saturday.
While not a Clark County team, Mark Morris, representing the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League, hit a walk-off grand slam to win the 2A state softball title.
In boys tennis, Lucas Walborn of Columbia River finished second in the Class 2A state tournament.
And to start off the spring championships, Clark County had a number of strong performances in state golf.
Alyssa Rigby of Mountain View lost in a playoff in the 3A girls tournament, settling for second place. Rigby rallied from a five-stroke deficit in the final round to force the playoff
Christian Harlow of King’s Way Christian lost in a playoff in the 1A boys tournament. Harlow was four shots off the lead heading into the final round.
Owen Winn of Columbia River finished second in the 2A boys tournament.
Washougal won the team title in 2A girls, led by Addison Paul, who finished third, and Keira Newman, who finished fifth.
The spring sports championships conclude this weekend in baseball, soccer, and track and field.
