Finals for Season 1 sports pushed to May or June of 2021, and starting dates tweaked for Season 2 and football

A week after announcing a tentative sports schedule for the 2020-21 academic year, the WIAA showed why it is called a tentative sports schedule.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has moved the championship events for the Season 1 sports later in the calendar, plus adjusted the start times for Seasons 2 and 3 to ease the burden of overlapping sports.

Football, in order to have more time to get the required number of practices in before a season, is on the calendar to begin practice on Feb. 17, 2021. That would be the start of Season 3.

Season’s 2 start dates have moved from the first week of January to late December. Basketball, wrestling, bowling, and gymnastics would then end a week earlier than the previous plan, allowing more time for multi-sport athletes to prepare for the Season 3 sports.

Slowpitch softball, as well as boys and girls cross country — Season 1 sports that could begin play in September — will now conduct culminating events at the end of Season 3, on May 1, 2021.

Boys golf and boys tennis, already alternative seasons for Southwest Washington athletics, will have its final events at the end of Season 4, in June.

It is possible that those Season 1 sports can still hold regular seasons in September and October in Clark County. Or all, or some, of the sports, can have the regular seasons pushed into 2021.

Clark County Today reached out to several athletic administrators Wednesday. No decisions have been made in regard to changing the regular seasons for those Season 1 sports.

It is possible the boys golf regular season could still be played in September and October, while the other Season 1 sports get moved.

Girls swimming was officially moved from Season 1 to Season 3.

The WIAA has had to drastically change its sports schedule in response to COVID-19. The WIAA noted in a press release that athletes, coaches, and fans should use the current schedule for planning purposes but remain flexible. The schedule remains tentative.
