The Composter Recycler program educates the community about easy ways to reduce waste, increase recycling and create healthier homes
VANCOUVER – Clark County’s Composter Recycler program is offering a series of free in-person workshops about composting and sustainable living strategies. The series will teach participants how to reduce their impact on the planet through composting, green cleaning, recycling, preventing food waste and reducing holiday waste. All workshops are 6-7:30 p.m. at Waste Connections of Washington, 9411 NE 94th Ave. in Vancouver. Families are welcome.
The workshops offered this fall are:
- Low Waste Chef: Wednesday, Oct. 8. Learn how to save money and prevent food waste in the kitchen.
- Curbside and Beyond – Recycling Done Right: Wednesday, Oct. 15. Learn how to be an expert recycler. Understand why only certain items can go into your blue recycling cart and glass bin.
- Worm Bin Composting: Wednesday, Oct. 22. Learn how to compost using red worms to turn food scraps into all-natural fertilizer.
- Backyard Composting: Wednesday, Oct. 29. Learn how to build and construct a hot compost pile using the SMART method.
- Green Cleaning: Wednesday, Nov. 5. Learn how to make three versatile and environmentally friendly household cleaners. See how fun and safe cleaning can be. Participants will receive a green cleaning kit at no cost.
- Low Waste Holiday: Wednesday, Nov. 12. This workshop shares simple ways to cut holiday waste – from eco-friendly gifts and meal planning tips to smart disposal of seasonal items. There will be a hands-on craft session using rescued materials.
- Gardening with Compost: Wednesday, Nov. 19. Move towards using compost to fertilize your garden, instead of synthetic fertilizers. Understand how to amend your soil and create a healthy soil ecosystem using various compost methods such as Bokashi, vermicomposting, backyard bin composting, trench composting and leaf mulching.
Pre-registration is required for all workshops. To register, visit the Composter Recycler website at clarkcountycomposts.org/classes-and-workshops/current-offerings. Registrants will receive a confirmation email after successful registration. Recordings of previous workshops are also available on the Composter Recycler website.
