Friday evening (Aug. 7) at 7:34 p.m., Camas police and fire units were dispatched to a water emergency at the south side of Round Lake in Lacamas Park. The 9-1-1 caller reported a male was struggling to swim after jumping off the rope swing near the Lacamas Creek Dam.
Witnesses made substantial effort to try to help the swimmer but were unable to get him to shore.
The Vancouver Fire Department’s Heavy Rescue Team responded but the victim was not located. Divers from the Clark County Sheriff Office Search & Rescue Underwater Recovery Team searched the lake until 3:30 a.m. Saturday but were unable to find the victim. Visibility was low and obstructions in the water made the mission difficult.
Efforts resumed early Saturday morning. The Underwater Recovery Team was assisted by their human remains detection K9. The body of a 19-year-old Camas resident was recovered Saturday at approximately 11:50 a.m.
City of Camas officials extend their condolences to the victim's family and ask the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
