Up to 10 parents can participate in 18-week course
VANCOUVER — Beginning in January, West Van for Youth and Children’s Home Society will offer a free, 18-week parenting course for up to 10 parents who live in the west-side 98660, 98661 and 98663 zip codes.
The evidence-based Incredible Years parenting classes are for parents and other caregivers of children ages 2-8.
Classes are held each Wednesday from Jan. 9, through May 8. Light meals and child care will be provided. Each session runs 5:30-8 p.m. at 1112 Columbia St. in Vancouver.
The course is focused on strengthening positive and nurturing parenting skills. Components include child-directed play, promoting language, social and emotional coaching, handling separations and reunions and effective limit setting and handling misbehavior. Parents will learn simple strategies through interactive education and hands-on coaching. Research shows that children whose parents complete Incredible Years are less likely to have behavioral or school problems or use drugs later in life.

The West Van for Youth coalition, comprised of students, individuals and public and private agencies, works to promote healthy choices and reduce substance misuse among youth. It was established in 2011 as part of the Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative, which is funded and administered by the Washington State Health Care Authority. Clark County is the fiscal agent for the coalition.
