Since 2014, the Battle Ground Police Department has teamed up with the Battle Ground Walmart store to host Shop with a Cop, offering an opportunity to spread some holiday cheer with local children.  In recent years the team of holiday cheer-meisters grew to include members from Battle Ground Senior Citizen Inc., lending their time and hearts to assist with this annual event.

On Saturday (Dec. 7), more than 20 local children shopped alongside fourteen Battle Ground police officers and professional staff, creating joyful memories and more importantly trust and connections with law enforcement.  Participating children were nominated by staff from Battle Ground Public Schools and by members of the police department.

Battle Ground’s annual Shop with a Cop would not be possible without the ongoing support of the Walmart Foundation who, this year alone, provided a $2,000 grant to fund the program. Additionally, the Battle Ground Senior Citizens group contributed an additional $300 dollars for this year’s shoppers. The incredible team at Walmart, led by Store Manager Brandi Quinlan, gave the warmest of welcomes, providing delicious treats, festive goodie bags, and appearances by Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Gingerbread Man, and a Toy Soldier. Because of their efforts, each child and officer truly felt the spirit of the holidays!

Many of the children chose necessities such as toothbrushes and socks, and selected gifts for their family members over themselves.  Moved by their selfless acts, several officers made personal contributions to cover additional items for these incredible kids.  Even some store patrons made donations, showing their support of the program.

“Battle Ground’s 10th Annual Shop with a Cop was a tremendous success,” said Battle Ground Police Chief Dennis Flynn.  “We are truly grateful for the opportunity to strengthen our bond with the community we serve and to help create lasting memories for these children.  We would like to express our sincerest thanks to our extraordinary partners, Walmart #5929, Lori Lindberg, and Battle Ground Senior Citizen Inc., for their on-going support; making this event possible.”
