State golf begins today with 50-plus from Clark County

Graham Moody of Mountain View is defending 3A champion

The spring state championships have started.

Most of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association state championship events for the spring season will be held later in the week, with team champions crowned on Saturday, as well as finals for tennis and track and field.

Golfers get an early taste of glory, though.

The WIAA state golf championships started today at various courses.

Graham Moody of Mountain View is the defending champion at Class 3A. He will tee off at 2:18 p.m. today at Indian Summer Country Club in Lacey.

Mountain View also qualified as a team. This is the first year the WIAA is using total strokes for a full team to determine a team champion. A year ago, Mountain View finished fourth as a team, using the points system. Prairie also qualified as a team in Class 3A.

In 4A boys, Owen Huntington of Camas was set to tee off at 9:18 a.m. at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course in Spokane. He finished fifth last season.

In 4A girls, the Camas Papermakers qualified as a team. They finished second last year in the points system. They are at Hangman Valley in Spokane.

In 3A girls, Mountain View qualified as a team.

The Ridgefield Spudders have a solid team in Class 2A boys. That squad includes Kellen Bringhurst, who had the rare feat of playing at state in two sports this season. He was a key member of the baseball team that reached the quarterfinals.

(Clarification: The 2A and 1A golf tournaments still use a points system to determine a team champion.)

Why a baseball photo in a golf story? Because Kellen Bringhurst of Ridgefield made it to state in baseball and in golf. He tees off today in the Class 2A tournament. He helped the Spudders reach the state quarterfinals in baseball. Photo by Mike Schultz

Here is a list of all golfers from Clark County who are set to play at state. There is a cut after today’s round, and the final round is Wednesday.
