Camas girls favored to win state cross country title for fifth time in six years

Camas is loaded for team and individual Class 4A state cross country titles when all classifications conduct their state championships Saturday at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course.

The Camas girls are shooting for their third consecutive state title and fifth in six years. The heavily-favored Papermakers warmed up for state meet with a runaway win at the Westside Classic, the largest 4A state qualifying last Saturday in Tacoma.

Emma Jenkins won the Westside title, and was among three Papermakers to finish in the top six. Jenkins is a state title contender, although defending champion Taylor Roe of Lake Stevens is a sizable favorite.

Camas boys are on a roll as well, as they also won the Westside Classic after posting an easy victory in the Greater St. Helens League meet earlier in October. Yacine Guermali and Daniel Maton led a 1-2 finish at Westside.

The Camas boys are a long shot to win the state title, but could crack the top five. But Guermali is certainly in the mix for the individual state title, as his season’s best time is second best in Washington.

In Class 3A, Mountain View’s Savanna Craig is the hunt for the girls state title after winning the 3A Westside Classic. Craig, who was eighth a year ago in the 4A state meet, has one of the fastest 3A times of the season. Also in the mix for a top 10 placing is Fort Vancouver’s Emily Phelps.

Mountain View qualified its boys to state. The Thunder boys are led by Samuel Johnson and Shun Yamaguchi, who placed among the top 10 at Westside.

Ridgefield and Washougal will run full teams in the boys and girls 2A meet. The top local hopeful is Ridgefield’s Silas Griffith, who was fifth in the 2015 state meet.
