VANCOUVER — Magenta Theater is known primarily as a performance venue for mainstage shows, improv events, staged readings and musicals. Due to ongoing requests from patrons and volunteers, Magenta is now offering more theater-related classes for adults.
Beginning Character Study Class
This class will lay the foundation for doing character studies using various exercises developed by Uta Hagen and her book on acting, Respect for Acting.
The class will run the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon for four months starting in January 2019. There is $5 cost per person, per month.
Class size is unlimited, however, the first 12 people who sign up for the class will be expected to participate in the exercises. Due to the limited time of each class, the rest of the class will observe.
It is recommended that students obtain a copy of the textbook that will be used, Respect For Acting, which can be found at bookstores or Amazon.com.
This class is being taught by Kathleen Sykora. Sykora holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree from The Theater School at DePaul University in Chicago. She was a founding member of the Stage Left Theater Company in 1982, one of the burgeoning theaters of the Off Loop Theater circuit in Chicago, which still produces plays in Chicago today. Her first Equity job was given to her by Gary Sinise, a founding member of the internationally renown Steppenwolf Theater Company. She shared the stage with Laurie Metcalf in an original play by Linda Seiffert, Coyote Ugly, that went on to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Sykora went on to be cast in many shows in the Off Loop theaters, appeared in movies and did voice over work.
Fast forward to 2015 when Sykora auditioned and was cast in her first role at Magenta Theater in Is He Dead? She has been an active participant in the theater ever since as actor, Vocal Director and ADSM (assistant to the director/stage manager). She was last seen in Once Upon A Palace Purple as the eccentric Charlotte Pipe, renown fashion designer to the royals.
She is thrilled to share her acting skills with the Magenta Community and looks forward to an exciting four months of classes.
