The Washington Department of Natural Resources and Clark County are working together to reduce the logging impact along the trail and have begun the first steps to save 60 acres of forest from timber harvest
YACOLT — The Moulton Falls Trail, one of the few ADA trails in Southwest Washington, could be damaged or disturbed if logging is allowed on the hillside upland to the south according to representatives of the Loo Wit Sierra Club.
The Washington Department of Natural Resources and Clark County are working together to reduce the logging impact along the trail and have begun the first steps to save 60 acres of forest from timber harvest. Clark County is considering exchanging suitable land with the DNR but must pay administrative costs to perform the exchange — between $20,000 and $50,000. The land exchange could also affect funding for state school, fire, cemetery and other junior taxing districts.
To help raise money to pay administrative costs and to support the taxing districts, Loo Wit Group Sierra Club will sponsor a fundraiser from 4-8 p.m. Sat., Oct. 19 at the Moulton Falls Winery in Yacolt. American folk band Brooks Hill will perform. Guests will receive one raffle ticket free.
Donations of $5 and higher will be taken. Donations may also be mailed to: Southwest Washington Sierra Club — Loo Wit Group, PO Box 13, Vancouver WA 98666.
“Saving this trail is so important,” said Linda Lorenz, who is spearheading the preservation effort. “This is a beautiful trail that attracts people from Oregon as well as Southwest Washington.”
Loo Wit secretary Emily Waters agrees. “I have seen people pushing baby strollers on the trail and people with disabilities enjoying the walk.”
