First Saturday in Ridgefield will feature Tailgate Party & Chili Challenge

RIDGEFIELD — Area community members are invited to venture to downtown Ridgefield this Saturday to enjoy music, fun, food, family friendly activities and a sense of community by attending to city’s First Saturday event.

This Saturday’s event, which will be held Feb. 4, will be a Tailgate Party & Chili Challenge.

The Tailgate Party festivities will begin at 11 a.m. at Ridgefield’s Overlook Park. Activities will include a Farmers Market and sports-related vendors; flag football games (all ages can participate); cornhole contest; face painting by the Ridgefield Art Association; DJ will provide entertainment and music; outdoor beer garden by 3Peaks Public House; and food vendors featuring Steakburger.

From noon-1 p.m., the second annual community Chili Challenge and Overlook Park will take place. Tasting and voting will take place from noon-1 p.m. There will be two competitions — a Professional Competition and an Amateur Competition. Anyone who can prepare chili in a commercial kitchen is eligible to participate in the Professional Competition and public tasting will determine the winner, and for the Amateur Competition, anyone who can bring a pot of chili is eligible.

A panel of judges will determine the winner of the Amateur Competition. There is a $25 fee to enter, and there will be cash prizes for first and second place, $250 for first place and $100 for second place.

At 1 p.m. there will be an announcement of the winners and a celebration. There will be a Football Scavenger Hunt, which will entail finding football team mascots at participating merchants around town to win prizes.

Anyone who attends the event wearing their favorite team colors will be entered into a prize drawing.

For more information about participating in the Chili Challenge, contact Ridgefield City Hall or Laurie Lanza, Sage Organics, at lanza.laurie@gmail.com.

First Saturdays include theme-related events and activities that include the Farmers Market, local artists displaying their work, athletics, a scavenger hunt, kids activities and other pop-up activities. There will also be the Farmers Market, sidewalk sales, outdoor concerts, local eateries and food vendors to enhance the festive atmosphere.
