Choirs and band will each perform at events spread over four days
VANCOUVER — The Clark College Women’s Choral Ensemble and Clark College Chorale under the direction of Dr. Jacob Funk present their Winter Concert on Thu., March 14, 7:30 p.m. in the Vancouver First United Methodist Church, 401 E 33rd St, Vancouver.
“Both of these ensembles are taking on some challenging repertoire this term,” says Funk, “and I am very excited about how well it is all coming together. Audiences will be moved by these incredible singers.”
Each choir will sing works from varied time periods and styles, ranging from 16th century French to compositions written within the last year. Highlights include a setting of Langston Hughes’ poem “I Dream A World” by Connor Koppin, Craig Hella Johnson’s “Gitanjali Chants,” the mystical “The Dawn is Not Distant” by Christine Donkin, and Gwyneth Walker’s “How Can I Keep From Singing.”
Admission to the performance is free and open to the public. Donations to the Clark College Music Department are welcome at the door.
Concert choir
The Clark College Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Jacob Funk present their Fall Concert on Sat., March 16, 7 p.m. in the Vancouver First United Methodist Church, 401 E 33rd St, Vancouver. The Concert Choir is joined by the Vancouver Chamber Singers, directed by Joel Karn, as a part of the Encore Concert Series at the Vancouver First United Methodist Church.
Admission to the performance free and open to the public. Donations to the Clark College Music Department are welcome at the door.
The Concert Choir will present works from Debussy, Monteverdi, Barnum, and others. Most of the pieces are based around the theme of love, with Parry’s “Love is a Sickness” providing a wonderful foil to Thomas Juneau’s lush “Sudden Light.” The choir will end with a rousing piece by Jacob Narverud called “Sisi ni moja,” which means “We are one.”
Concert band
The Clark College Concert Band under the direction of Dr. Doug Harris presents its Winter Concert on Sun., March 17, 7:30 p.m. in the Fort Vancouver High School Auditorium.
Featured on the program is John Barnes Chance’s classic band work Incantation and Dance, Pageant by Vincent Persichetti and Leroy Anderson’s fun-filled Irish Washerwoman, among other pieces. The “title” work for this concert is Derek Bourgious’ Serenade, a truly delightful piece. Admission to the performance is free and open to the public. Donations to the Clark College Music Department are welcome at the door.
“This concert offers something for everyone, from classic original wind band works, to Romantic-era opera transcriptions to our title work, Serenade, by English composer Derek Bourgious. Along with being a great piece of music, this work has a wonderful, humorous back-story to it … you’ll just have to come to the concert to find out what it is!” says conductor Doug Harris.
