SCOTUS ruled on Wednesday to allow the state of Virginia to reinstate a purge of its voter rolls of some 1,600 suspected non-citizens
Washington State Republican Party (WAGOP) Chairman Jim Walsh issued the following statement after the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled on Wednesday to allow the state of Virginia to reinstate a purge of its voter rolls of some 1,600 suspected non-citizens.
“This US Supreme Court Decision is a win for election integrity everywhere in the United States including here in Washington state. The SCOTUS ruling clarifies that WA Secretary of State Steve Hobbs and local elections officials in our state have a duty to purge voter rolls of the deceased, those who have moved away, illegal immigrants, and those who shouldn’t be here in the first place.
“State law says that those officials should be cleaning up voter databases on an ongoing basis. There is little evidence that they are.
“Washington elections officials starting with WA Sec. of State Hobbs have a duty to maintain trustworthy voter rolls. Today’s SCOTUS ruling confirms this. Sec. Hobbs and elections officials: Do your job! The people of Washington demand that you show us that you are performing your legal duty.”
The 6-3 SCOTUS decision comes just six days ahead of the Nov. 5 general election with liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissenting.
“The SCOTUS ruling in VA is a major step forward for election integrity in our country and restoring trust in our elections,” adds WAGOP endorsed candidate for Secretary of State Dale Whitaker. “This is a common-sense solution to ensuring that only US citizens are on our voter rolls — and voting in our elections. We need common-sense leadership in the Secretary of State’s office in Washington which is what I will bring to the office.”
The High Court’s emergency stay issued today comes after a federal judge blocked the purging of voter rolls at the request of the Biden administration.
