Residents were able to safely evacuate the home thanks to working smoke detectors
Crews from the Vancouver Fire Department (VFD) and Clark County Fire District 6 were able to extinguish a house fire Monday night.
At about 11:30 p.m. Monday (April 11), seven units from the VFD were dispatched to a house fire in the 8700 block of NE 76th Avenue. The homeowner called in and reported his garage was on fire. He was alerted to the fire by working smoke detectors in his home.
The first Vancouver fire engine arrived four minutes after dispatch and found heavy fire showing from the front of the house and immediately began attacking the fire to keep it from spreading. Everyone was able to safely exit the house after being awoken by the working smoke detectors in the home. Fortunately, the homeowner also closed the door to his house when he evacuated which kept the fire from spreading at a much faster pace and allowed firefighters to gain control of this fire quicker and lowered the property loss.
A total of nine units from VFD and one unit from Fire District 6 assisted in fighting the fire and brought it under control in 12 minutes after arrival. There were no reported injuries.
VFD officials would like to remind the community about the importance of having working smoke detectors in your home.
