Vancouver Firefighters battle early morning fire at a commercial building

The Vancouver Fire Department responded to a fire early Tuesday at the site of Northwest Packing Co. in Vancouver.

At about 4:40 a.m. Tuesday (March 29), VFD units were dispatched for an unknown outside fire near the intersection of Thompson Ave. and Mill Plain Blvd. A short time later, CRESA started receiving multiple callers and the first responding engine witnessed visible fire and smoke from approximately one mile away. More resources were then called for.

Once the first Vancouver fire engine arrived on scene at 4:42 a.m., crews found a large amount of fire on two sides of the building and pulled hose lines to protect the uninvolved portion of the building and nearby semi-trucks, and packing material. 

The first arriving incident commander called a second alarm which included units from Clark County Fire District 6, totaling 15 units and over 40 firefighters to gain control of the fire. 

The building at 1701 Thompson Ave. houses NW Packing Co. in Vancouver. There were company representatives on scene prior to arrival and they assisted in guiding responders into the large commercial complex. 

The fire was declared under control in 51 minutes after the arrival of the first fire unit. There were no reported injuries, and the fire is currently under investigation by the Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office and the Vancouver Police Department.
