Vancouver Charter Review Committee considers City Council salary process

Meeting set for Wed., April 17 at Vancouver City Hall

VANCOUVER — The city of Vancouver’s Charter Review Committee will discuss potential changes to the way city council salaries are set at their next meeting Wed., April 17. The meeting will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Vancouver City Hall, Aspen

conference room, 415 W. Sixth St.

Vancouver City Council salaries are currently set by the council-appointed Salary Review Commission. One option being considered by the Charter Review Committee is to abolish the salary commission and tie city council salaries to the percentage increase recommended for state legislators by the Washington State Salary Commission.  Another option being discussed is retaining the City’s Salary Review Commission and putting a cap the percentage increase the commission can approve.

Vancouver residents are invited to provide input on the proposed changes during citizen communications at the April 17 Charter Review Committee meeting, or by email tovancmo@cityofvancouver.us.

Vancouver’s charter was originally approved by voters in 1952. It forms the “constitution” of the city government and guides its structure and operations. Every five years, a committee of 15 citizens meets to review the charter and make recommendations for changes to Vancouver City Council. If the changes are approved by council, they are then placed on the ballot for a public vote at the next general election.
