Man transported to area hospital with serious injuries
A 40-year-old man was struck by a vehicle late Tuesday night in Vancouver.
At about 11:46 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 15), Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputies and EMS personnel responded to the report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian in the 10100 block of NE 50th Avenue.
The 9-1-1 caller was the driver of the involved vehicle, who stated she had struck someone. Upon arrival, EMS personnel tended to Robert J. Gonzales, who was lying in the roadway with obvious injuries. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Eliza B. Martorano, remained at the scene to assist deputies.
Scene evidence and statements by Martorano revealed that Gonzales was walking in the northbound lane of NE 50th Avenue when he was struck by Martorano’s Kia hatchback. Gonzales was not wearing reflective clothing, nor was he in a crosswalk. There are no streetlights on this section of roadway and the posted speed limit is 40 mph. Northeast 50th Avenue also has a paved sidewalk on the east side of the roadway.
Martorano did not exhibit any signs of intoxication and was not issued any citations at the scene. Gonzales was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.
This collision is under investigation by the CCSO Traffic Unit. Martorano, 19, is a resident of Vancouver. Gonzales, 40, is currently homeless.
