Opposing statement sought for Nov. 7 ballot measure

The November 2023 General voters’ guide in Clark County lacks an opposing statement for a local ballot measure on an EMS Regular Property Tax Levy, prompting the Elections Office to seek citizens interested in writing one before the deadline on August 7.

The November General voters’ guide includes a local ballot measure with supporting and opposing statements written by citizens

VANCOUVER  ‒ Every election, the Clark County Auditor’s Office provides an online and printed voters’ guide with information about candidates and ballot measures for voters to make an informed decision when voting. The November General voters’ guide includes a local ballot measure with supporting and opposing statements written by citizens.

A legislative body placing a measure on the ballot can appoint a committee to write a supporting statement and another committee to write an opposing statement. But often, the Elections Office receives only a supporting statement for a local ballot measure. If the group cannot identify anyone to oppose the ballot measure, then the Elections Office staff attempts to identify citizens interested in authoring such a statement.

For the November 2023 general and special election, the Elections Office has identified a proposition that does not have citizens appointed to write a statement against. A proposition from The City of Washougal for an EMS Regular Property Tax Levy has no committee against.

To review the complete text of the resolution for the August primary and special election ballot, visit clarkvotes.org and follow the link to November. 7, 2023 General and Special Election located near the top of the page.

Any citizen interested in writing an opposing statement is asked to contact Cathie Garber of the Clark County Elections Department at (564) 397-2345. Please call soon as the deadline to express interest is 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7.

“The public is best served by providing information which presents a fair and balanced debate on the merits of local measures submitted for a vote,” said Auditor Greg Kimsey. “We urge anyone interested to help us get their opposing statement to this local measure into the online voters’ guide.”
