Manual recounts to be conducted for city of Vancouver Council Position No. 1 and Hockinson School District Director District No. 1
VANCOUVER – The Clark County Canvassing Board, on Tue., Nov. 23, authorized mandatory manual recounts of ballots cast in Clark County for the city of Vancouver, Council, Position No. 1 race and the Hockinson School District No. 98, Director District No. 1 race from the Nov. 2, 2021 general election.
Unsealing of the boxes containing the ballots will begin at 9 a.m. Mon., Nov. 29. Ballots will be sorted into precincts. The manual recount of the ballots will begin on Dec. 6 at 9 a.m., unless the sorting process has not been completed by Dec. 3, then the manual recount will begin the next business day after the sorting is finished.
In the race for Position 1 on the Vancouver City Council, Kim Harless is ahead of John Blom by just 45 votes. Harless, co-chair of the Charter Review Commission, has received 16,773 votes (49.58 percent). Blom, a former member of the Clark County Council, has 16,728 votes (49.45 percent).
In the race for Director Position 1 in the Hockinson School District, only 17 votes separate the two candidates on the ballot. Teresa Van Natta, an elementary school teacher in the Evergreen School District, has received 1,597 votes (49.88 percent). Tim Hawkins, who has held the position since being appointed in Sept. 2020, has 1,580 votes (49.34 percent).
The manual recount will be held in the Clark County Elections Department located at 1408 Franklin St. Subject to reasonable and equitable guidelines adopted by the canvassing board, all interested persons may attend and witness the recounts. Masks are required.
