White dashed lines, called optical markers, will be added in both directions of SR 503 leading up to the roundabout
BATTLE GROUND – Travelers who use State Route 503 near Rock Creek Road just north of Battle Ground will see crews adding more safety features in the roundabout and should be prepared for delays.
On Tuesday (Dec. 3), Washington State Department of Transportation contractor, Tapani Inc., will complete striping work for the SR 503 / NE Rock Creek Rd project. White dashed lines, called optical markers, will be added in both directions of SR 503 leading up to the roundabout. These markers help travelers understand they need to reduce their speed.
What to expect
- Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Travelers in both directions of SR 503, near Rock Creek Road at milepost 13.7, will alternate intermittently through a single lane.
- Flaggers will guide travelers through the area and delays of up to 20 minutes should be expected.
- This work is weather dependent and may be paused at any time, due to inclement weather.
After the striping work is done, other safety improvements will include raised pavement markers, like small speed bumps, and 20 mph advisory signs. This additional work is needed due to reckless driving and improper use of the roundabout.
Earlier this fall, contractor crews finished building a compact roundabout, also called a mini roundabout, at this intersection. This safety improvement increases safety by reducing crashes, keeps traffic flowing and makes it easier for all types of vehicles to use.
If you’re unsure how to properly use a roundabout, remember to always slow down when approaching a roundabout, yield to traffic already in the roundabout and never stop while inside it. Stay in your lane and don’t cross the center median.
