John Boyd, current superintendent of the Quincy School District in central Washington, will transition to new position at the start of 2022
The Evergreen School Board members voted Tuesday (Dec. 28) to approve John Boyd as the Evergreen Public Schools interim superintendent. Boyd, the current superintendent of the Quincy School District in central Washington, brings deep experience in teaching, instruction, multilingual education and administrative leadership gained over a nearly 30-year career.
Boyd was offered the position after interviewing with School Board members and a group of school administrators and district staff. “John’s experience covers all the areas that are important to the district including a proven instructional leader, adaptable to a changing learning environment, a commitment to diversity, as well as recent strategic plan development. His experience also includes time at large districts, as well as a small district, so he understands school systems and constituents,” said Board President Victoria Bradford.
Boyd, who is fluent in Spanish, and also speaks Mandarin, started his school career as a paraeducator, moved into teaching, then served as a principal and instruction leader and now has spent eight years as a superintendent. He has worked in large school districts including Seattle, Edmonds and Highline. In his time as superintendent in Quincy, A smaller rural district, he has increased test scores and graduation rates while implementing culturally-appropriate supports for multilingual students and families, as well as overseeing a facilities bond and construction work. He also led a team that has successfully connected students in a rural 450-square mile district during remote learning.
Boyd said he has had candid conversations with the Board and the district’s staff leadership team. “I am excited for the challenge. Evergreen has made great strides in improving student growth and outcomes over the last decade. We need to now refocus the work of the district on that instructional base, and support the schools in moving forward.”
Boyd will transition to this new position after the start of 2022, pending the finalization of a contract.
