The Battle Ground Police Department has received several reports of auto prowls and thefts since May 2. Many of these incidents occurred in the northwest quadrant of the city, north of Main Street/west of SR-503. Officers continue to investigate these incidents; however, no suspect information is immediately available.
Preventing auto prowls and thefts
The majority of auto prowls and thefts are preventable by following these simple steps.
Secure your vehicle: roll up your windows, lock your doors, trunks, canopies, etc. Oftentimes criminals are seeking an easy target and will simply test vehicle door handles to gain access. If the door is locked, they are more likely to keep moving.
Do not leave valuable items in your vehicle. Items such as cell phones, mail, wallets/ purses or even loose change in your cup holder may be enticing enough to draw a criminal’s attention. It is also common for firearms to be stolen when left in unoccupied vehicles. By removing these temptations, you may reduce the chances of your vehicle becoming a target.
Park in well-lit areas or in a garage. Attention is the last thing a criminal wants. When leaving your vehicle during evening or nighttime hours park under streetlights or in a garage when possible. This may lessen a criminal’s interest in your vehicle out of fear of being seen.
How can the public help?
The Battle Ground Police Department values input from our citizens. You could be the extra eyes and ears that help lead officers to a suspect.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or crimes in their area by calling 9-1-1 immediately. If you witness a vehicle prowl, do not confront the prowler. If you are able to do so, get a good description of the prowler. Details such as height, weight, clothing, and direction of travel are helpful to officers when attempting to locate a person of interest.
If you find you are a victim or become aware of suspicious activity after the fact, please report it by calling 3-1-1. Awareness and information sharing gives law enforcement the tools they need to prevent and solve crimes, and protect our community.
