New construction that occurred in the city in 2020 will lift the total amount of property tax collected by $122,776
The Battle Ground City Council held the second of three public hearings related to the city’s proposed 2021 Budget at their most recent meeting on Nov. 16. Members of the City Council also adopted resolutions setting the city’s 2021 Fee Schedule and Property Tax Levy. As part of the budget process, the council is required to establish the amount of property taxes to be collected in the upcoming year.
In 2020, the city collected a total of $3,319,314 in property tax (referred to as the 2020 levy base) which translated to a property tax rate of $1.35 per thousand of assessed value.
For 2021, state law allows the City Council to increase the 2020 levy base by as much as .602 percent. The Battle Ground City Council, however, opted not to increase the property tax levy, and at the Nov. 16 meeting formally adopted a resolution calling for a zero percent property tax increase in 2021.
New construction that occurred in the city in 2020 will lift the total amount of property tax collected by $122,776, for a total of $3,441,090 in property taxes collected for the 2021 budget.
With additional property owners sharing the cost of city services, the property tax levy rate will decrease from $1.35 per thousand of assessed value in 2020 to $1.29 per thousand in 2021.
Property tax revenue, along with sales and utility tax revenue, pays for city services such as police, streets, planning, and parks and recreation.
City Council will hold the final public hearing on the proposed 2021 budget at their Mon., Dec. 7 meeting. Council meetings are always open to the public. The meeting begins at 7 pm and will be held remotely by Zoom.
The meeting agenda will be posted to the city’s Agenda Center at www.cityofbg.org/AgendaCenter by Thu., Dec. 3 and will include details on how to sign on to the meeting and participate in the public hearing.
