Vancouver’s charter was originally approved by voters in 1952
VANCOUVER — The city of Vancouver’s Charter Review Committee recently convened to review the city’s charter and make recommendations for potential changes.
This year, the Charter Review Committee is interested in exploring options related to how city council member salaries are established and will also consider whether council members should be elected by district, rather than at large.
Vancouver citizens are welcome to suggest changes to the charter during this review period. The next Charter Review Committee meeting will be 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wed., March 20 in the Aspen Conference Room at City Hall, 415 W. Sixth St.
Vancouver’s charter was originally approved by voters in 1952. It forms the “constitution” of the city government and guides its structure and operations. Every five years, a committee of 15 citizens meets to review the charter and make recommendations for changes to Vancouver City Council. If the changes are approved by council, they are then placed on the ballot for a public vote at the next general election.
