Officers who are drug recognition experts will be among the extra patrols May 5-6
CLARK COUNTY — Those looking forward to celebrating Cinco De Mayo should know local law enforcement officers will have an increased presence on area roadways this weekend.
On May 5 and 6, the Vancouver Police Department, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol will have additional officers on the road enforcing DUI laws and looking for drunken or drugged drivers, according to a press release.
Drug recognition experts will be among the officers taking part in the patrols.
“The Vancouver Police Department reminds anyone who may be out this weekend celebrating Cinco de Mayo or enjoying the warm spring weather, and who may also be consuming intoxicants, to designate a sober driver in advance, use mass transit, or hire a car service to get to around town, but don’t get behind the wheel,” the department wrote in a press release.
Drivers who see a motorist who appears to be intoxicated are asked to call 9-1-1.
The DUI emphasis is funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. The money pays for the overtime costs of the additional drivers in addition to marketing in support of Target Zero, a strategic roadmap that seeks to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2030.
