Lawmaker was honored for his work on tobacco control legislation
Rep. Paul Harris has received the National Distinguished Advocacy Award (NDAA) from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) for his work on tobacco control legislation.
The NDAA is the most prestigious and highest national advocacy honor bestowed by the ACS CAN and is the mark of distinction and accomplishment in the field of public policy advocacy pertaining to cancer.
Harris was presented the award at the ACS CAN Washington State Policy Luncheon on Fri., Sept. 27 in Seattle.
“I am truly honored and very appreciative to be recognized by such a great organization,” Harris, R-Vancouver. “I am always working to make a difference in the lives of our young people. We are heading in the right direction, but there is much more we can do to ensure our youth are healthy so they can thrive with a sound body and mind.”
Harris has worked the last five years to pass Tobacco 21 legislation, prohibiting the sale of cigarettes, tobacco and vapor products to anyone under the age of 21.
Harris was the prime-sponsor of House Bill 1074, the Tobacco 21 legislation signed into law this year. Washington was the ninth state to pass a Tobacco 21 law. The legislation takes effect Jan. 1, 2020.
