Charter schools in Washington scored a victory yesterday, as Gov. Jay Inslee signed into law Rep. Paul Harris’ bill that will enhance administration capabilities at state charter schools.

Harris was not in attendance for the signing, due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and precautions, but he did watch the proceedings from Vancouver.

“I’m very happy for our charter schools,” said Harris, R-Vancouver. “I believe every school in Washington, whether it’s public, private, or chartered, deserves the opportunity to be successful. When our schools are successful, our kids are successful.”

The bill will help the Charter School Commission operate more effectively, with the assistance of the executive director. It will also ensure the right people are in place to help charter schools be properly organized and perform better.

“Now that the governor has signed this into law, I’m confident that Washington charter schools will take several positive steps forward,” added Harris.

House Bill 2853 is set to take effect June 10 of this year.
