Service for 25-year veteran to be held Tue., Oct. 1 in Longview
Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue officials regret to announce Battalion Chief Mike Zainfeld unfortunately took his own life on Sept. 19 after battling a job-related injury incurred by occupational stress. A 25-year veteran firefighter, Zainfeld leaves behind his wife Kelly and two boys, Braden (17) and Evan (16).
Zainfeld began with Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue in September of 1994 as a fire cadet in the first year of this program. Zainfeld was hired full time in 2000 after completing paramedic training in Tacoma. After several years as a firefighter, he was promoted to lieutenant, captain, and lastly as battalion chief. He was active in all hazard deployments, qualified as a division supervisor, and has been on assignments in several states.
Zainfeld enjoyed spending time with his family, vacationing with his immediate family and his extended fire family. Mike also enjoyed spending time with his German Shepard “Max” and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, flying his drone and history books.
A memorial service will be held on Tue., Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. at New Life Fellowship Church located at 2441 42nd Ave., Longview, WA, 98632. Agencies wishing to send fire apparatus to the service, should go to www.c2fr.org for further details and to sign up.
