VANCOUVER — The 2018 Capital Facilities Bond measure passed by Evergreen Public School voters is helping the district get rid of a dubious distinction-one of the highest percentage of classes held in portable classrooms.
With the May 18 groundbreaking of Evergreen’s 22nd elementary school near the corner of NE 162nd Avenue and NE 39th Street, not only will over 500 students have a portable-free school, other adjacent schools (Burnt Bridge Creek, Harmony and Pioneer) will also see fewer classes in portables.
The new school, which will be named through a student-led research project and recommendation to the Evergreen Board of Directors, will be one of six new or rebuilt elementary schools to use a new “prototypical” design template that combines natural light and an open learning environment with modern safety and security features. The new school building is slated to open in the Fall of 2020 along with the newly rebuilt Image and Sifton elementary schools.
At 10 a.m., the newly named principal, Darcy Mitchelson (who is currently the Burnt Bridge Creek principal), along with students slated to attend the new school, will help lead the Groundbreaking ceremony. This event open to the public, and will also have displays of the new school and site plan:
